Geico Semi-Truck Insurance

Because of their large size and weight, semi-trucks require special insurance coverage. Accidents involving semis generally cause significantly more damage and more severe injuries compared to other commercial and passenger vehicles.

Finding coverage for a semi-truck can be challenging. Most truckers turn to well-known insurers first. Geico is one of the leading insurance companies in the U.S., and they do offer commercial auto insurance.

But do they offer dedicated semi-truck insurance policies? We get that question at least once per week. So let’s try to unravel this question once and for all.

Does Geico Offer Commerical Truck Insurance Coverage?

Although Geico offers a wide range of insurance options, they currently do not offer semi-truck insurance or insurance for tractor-trailers.

However, they do offer commercial insurance coverage for other types of trucks.

Geico’s commercial auto insurance options cover vehicles that are used for business purposes. Some types of policies may have specific coverages, but generally, a commercial auto insurance policy will cover:

  • Damage to another person’s property
  • Damage to your vehicle
  • Injuries

Geico’s commercial auto policies do not cover semi-trucks, but they do cover:

Coverage Options

If you’re looking for commercial vehicle insurance for box trucks or any one of the other types of vehicles listed above, you may be wondering what’s covered and what’s not under a commercial auto policy.

Like your personal auto insurance, Geico’s commercial auto policies cover important things like liability, medical payments, uninsured motorist coverage, collision and comprehensive. However, there are differences between:

  • Eligibility
  • Coverages
  • Exclusions
  • Limits

Specifically, Geico’s auto insurance policies offer the following coverages:

  • Property Damage Liability: If your commercial truck accidentally damages someone else’s property, property damage liability will cover the cost of repairs or replacement. Typically, it also includes legal defense coverage if the other party files a lawsuit.
  • Bodily Injury Liability: If another person is injured or killed in an accident you caused, bodily injury liability will cover these damages. This coverage also typically includes legal defense.
  • Uninsured Motorist: This policy will cover injuries and certain types of damages caused by an uninsured motorist or in hit-and-run incidents. Underinsured motorist coverage may also be included, which would cover damages caused by at-fault drivers with insufficient insurance coverage.
  • Combined Single Limit, or CSL: Most auto insurance policies have separate limits for bodily injury and property damage liabilities. CSL ensures that you have the same amount of coverage for each type of liability regardless of how many people were involved in the accident.
  • Medical Payments: If the driver and/or passengers of your vehicle were injured in an accident, medical payments coverage would cover medical costs for these injuries – regardless of who was at fault.
  • Collision: If your vehicle is hit by an object (or vehicle) or you hit another object, collision will cover the cost of repairs.
  • Comprehensive: If your vehicle is damaged by flood, fire, theft, vandalism or other covered perils, comprehensive will cover the cost of repairs.

These are the basic coverages included with a Geico auto insurance policy. This type of policy will cover not only yourself but also employees, family members and other drivers.

What About Trailers?

In some cases, trailers are automatically covered by Geico’s commercial auto policies.

  • For under 2,000 lbs. gross weight vehicle, liability coverage is automatic. Theft and damage will only be covered if you add the trailer to your policy.
  • If it’s more than 2,000 lbs., the trailer will only be covered if you add it to your policy. No automatic coverage is provided.

Other Coverage From Geico for Truckers

In addition to the coverage options listed above, there are other types of coverage that you can add to expand your protection.

Business Owner’s Policy

If you work as an owner operator or run a fleet of trucks, you should have a business owner’s policy (BOP).

BOP insurance will cover:

  • Property damage liability
  • Bodily injury liability
  • Damage to business equipment and furniture

If you carry tools or other materials as part of your job, a BOP will likely cover these items if they are damaged in an accident.

General Liability

General liability, also known as business liability, is another important component of business insurance coverage. Much like BOP, general liability will cover:

  • Property damage
  • Bodily injuries

But it will also cover:

  • Legal defense costs
  • Advertising or personal injury

Transporting goods is risky business, and general liability will help cover the cost of third-party claims for property damage or injuries.

Workers’ Compensation

If you have employees, you will likely need workers’ compensation insurance. Geico also offers this coverage, which makes it easy to give your business the protection it needs.

Most states require workers’ comp by law. Combining this coverage with other auto insurance and business insurance policies from Geico may help you save money on your premiums.

If one of your employees is injured while on the job, workers’ comp will cover:

  • Medical costs
  • Lost income
  • Rehabilitation to help employees get back to work
  • Legal costs
  • Funeral expenses if the accident results in death

Is Geico the Right Choice for Your Insurance Needs?

If you’re in need of semi-truck insurance, Geico isn’t a viable option for you. But for box trucks, food trucks and utility vehicles, Geico is a popular option for commercial auto insurance as well as business insurance coverage.

Choosing an insurer is a personal decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly – especially when your business is on the line. It’s important to compare quotes and consider the specifics of Geico’s coverage options to see if they are a good fit for your insurance needs.
